Duranta erecta "Saphire Showers", also known as pigeon berry, or skyflower, is a cold-tender tropical shrub to small tree that thrives in sunlight and heat.
Hardy Zones: 8 - 12
Soil: light and well drained
Pruning: light tip pruning of branches in spring. To keep tree looking fresh cut back branches approximately 50% each spring. Regrowth will occur in several locations. In regions of mild freezes the plant will naturally die back rejuvenating the following spring. Make each cut just above an outward facing leaf.
Sun: full sun 6 or more hours of direct sunlight
Height 4 ft - 6 ft
Water: if kept in containers water frequently in the summer. Moist soil encourages abundant flowering.
Fertilizer: all purpose, slow release in spring and summer.
Garden pests: Observe the leaves for signs of disease or insect damage each time you water the plant. Wash off small populations of aphids or mites with a steady stream of water. Spray leaves heavily infested with aphids or whiteflies with an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
To increase flowering, deadhead flower clusters to encourage new growth. Cut through the flower stalk at a point just above the second set of leaves below the bloom.
Less than 4 hours of direct sunlight diminishes flower blooms
Do NOT EAT yellow berries/yellow fruits of Saphire Showers.
